Getting started in the sport of fly fishing can be intimidating, though it need not be particularly difficult. Here at Sweetwater Fly Shop, we do all we can to make fly fishing accessible to the beginner, from happily answering even the most basic questions, to making equipment and reading suggestions, to hosting regular free beginner’s casting clinics throughout the summer season (see our events calendar for details).
For a fully-immersed introduction to fly fishing, many beginners, even first-timers, opt to take a guided fishing trip. Guided trips are not just for experienced anglers; they are also perfect for fly fishing lessons! Our guides are expert and patient instructors and love to introduce beginners to the sport they love. With a day to fish under the tutelage of a guide, beginners are almost guaranteed to improve markedly in their skills by the end of the day. And catching fish, though never guaranteed, is a distinct possibility.
First time fly angler? Want to learn the basics of fly casting & fishing but don’t want to commit a full day to a guided trip? This fly fishing lesson is for you. Spend 2 hours with one of our talented and patient instructors.
First, you’ll spend some time going through the Fly Shop and learning Fly Fishing basics, the equipment and how it all works. Then we will go out on our back lawn and learn basic fly casting, setting the hook, and how to fight the fish! Lastly (if conditions allow) your instructor will take you at the river or the local pond to tie on a fly and make a basic presentation. If you’re lucky, you might end up with a picture of yourself holding a fish! It’s a great way to “get your feet wet” in the sport of fly fishing.
