Yesterday I casted the 2016 Vapen 590-4B by Redington. The rod was extremely strong while maintaining a reputation for its fast action. Redington’s X-Wrap graphite technology gives the rod its backbone with added stability. The X-Wrap also provides a smoothness to the various vibrations fly-fisherman are so accustomed to feeling over the course of a day on the river. Overall, the strength of the rod provided maximum casting distance while maintaining the traits everyone loves about a fast action rod. This rod was a perfect marriage of rigidity and maneuverability, for me.
Perhaps the most striking new feature on the Vapen is the non-slip polymer grip Redington calls “PowerGrip”. The golf-club-like grip offers maximum gripping capabilities in the wettest of weather while allowing the most fragile-handed fisherman to cast for hours on end. The grip stands apart from the classic fly rod cork and I felt a noticeable difference in the grip feel during my time spent with the rod.
The carbon fiber reel seat reflects the rod’s smooth charcoal style with custom anodized highlights that act as a metaphor for the rod’s quiet but showy style. Weighing in at 3.2 ounces, this black beauty is said to fish well in all water types and I can’t imagine the Vapen is anything less than a quality companion on any fishing trip, Montana or beyond.
