The Yellowstone River fished very well yesterday. With dry flies, even. Those of you who are aficionados of the Chubby Chernobyl (and who isn’t?) can start fishing your favorite fly. I’d tie on a couple of feet of tippet and drop a brown, black, or peacock Rubberlegs, brown Rock ‘n Roller Stone, or other large stonefly nymph pattern. Cast it in tight to the banks and get ready. If that rig’s too unwieldy to cast, you could instead drop a Tungsten Yellow Sally or Kyle’s Beadhead Yellow Sally. If you’re committed to dry flies only, your dropper could be an Elkhair Caddis (or other caddis dry – I’d go with an olive body, size 14 or 16, based on the bugs I saw out the other day), Yellow Sally Rollin’ Stone, Snowshoe Yellow Sally, or Everything Emerger. We had a report of fish being caught on Salmonfly dries yesterday, though we haven’t heard of any naturals being seen yet. That’ll come soon!
