Oh boy! Winston has gone and done it now! Just when you thought you had your quiver of rods all figured out there ends up being something you just have to have. The Winston BIIIx is it!
I had the privilege to fish the 9 foot 6wt version of this rod on the Yellowstone. It was hard to pry it out of Winston Rep Chris Hart’s hands, but somehow it ended up in my boat the day after we got to see the new Winston line.Being a fan of the now old BIIX, I was happy to see that they haven’t changed the look. The action of this rod is more progressive than it’s predecessor. I Have always believed that The BIIx And BIIt were very close in action. The BIIIX clears everything up as it fits perfectly between the BIIT and the BIImx. This rod is a fast action rod with a tremendous amount of feel and touch, A true all-arounder. We fished it with Size 16 dries to double nymph rigs to articulated patches of rabbit fur that would gag the largest birds of prey. It does it all.
This rod is also more accommodating to sink-tip lines than the BIIx as it offers more power through the bottom half of the rod, there is more power in this rod and you will notice it when you carry more line. At close range, you will think you still have your BIIx in your hand. The tip is super sensitive and helps to provide close range accuracy. There is one other new thing about this rod, it now comes in a woven graphite Winston tube. If you are a Winston fan, you have to have it, this is another classic. If you have ever thought about buying a Winston, now is the time to take the plunge. These rods are available now. Don’t wait until next spring, and if you do I hope Winston can pump em’ out fast enough to keep up with the demand.
