I caught the Arctic Grayling in the photos above in Hyalite Reservoir near Bozeman. The fish are beautiful and wild, spawning in the creek above the lake. And they are completely protected. You are not allowed to kill any of them or to fish in their spawning grounds until the third Saturday in July.
But Montana’s Arctic Grayling are in trouble across most of their native range. This link will take you to the story, “The Sad Tale of Montana’s Arctic Grayling: A Case Study in Agency Maleficence,” by George Weuthner. It’s a hard look at where we stand with native Grayling in Montana and where we are heading. Its worth a read.
